Hinged Belt Splices
back
This type is often referred to as 'alligator', (a U.S. manufacturers trade name) and sometimes even 'crocodile'! The stated advantage is that as the fastener is produced from continuous strips of pressed metal, there is little danger of pieces of metal detaching themselves from the belt into the medium carried (which may be food). This can be a problem with carded hooks but can also happen to lacing when abrasion is severe. A serious disadvantage is that metal lacing damages the 'bullnose' on installation and this can lead to premature failure. Also, if damage occurs at the side of the splice and because the lacing is in one piece, all of the lacing can work loose, that does not happen with carded hooks as only individual hooks are lost and not the complete splice. It is Biscor policy to recommend hook rather than metal lacing fasteners, except for food applications.
