Promotion - Andrew Smith – Plant Manager - 2006

Andrew Smith has chosen to take the position of ‘Plant Manager’ at Biscor Limited. The thirty year old company has recently taken up new residence at Bradford’s Kingsmark Freeway industrial park where they will carry out their PTFE and silicone rubber coating of glass fabrics and Kevlar®.

Andy will head both the coating and fabrication departments, these separate entities were split geographically at their previous premises. They are now united, not only under one roof, but also by one manager – ensuring that communication, understanding and cooperation between the two departments is at an all time best – essential for the smooth running of such a logistically specific outfit.

Andy began his professional career when as a school-leaver, in 1978, he joined ‘fancy worsted and velvet manufacturers’ Lister & Co (Bradford) as an apprentice weaving technician. After completing his apprenticeship and staying with the company for five years, he moved on to other weaving establishments in the West Yorkshire area – never straying too far from his roots (anyone who knows Andy would agree he is a typical Yorkshire-man – calling a spade a shovel).

He joined Biscor Limited at their factory in Little Germany in 2000 as a fabric tester in the laboratory, gradually expanding his knowledge initially of glass fabrics and other substrates, leading onto advanced fluoropolymer dispersions, pigments and additives. Philip Heath, former owner of Biscor Limited, is cited as a major influence and source of inspiration for Andy – providing him with valuable advice and guidance, as well as precious technical data and knowledge of applications.

Biscor was bought by Dutch PLC Gamma Holding in January 2004, cooperating and sharing information and expertise with counterparts at sister companies, Scott O’Hearn at Green Belting Industries in Canada and Ingo Bleier at Verseidag Indutex in Germany.

Working with organisations such as DuPont™ and Solvay Solexis, Andy has brought significant innovations to Biscor Limited, increasing the range and versatility of their technical textiles and industrial fabrics to reach ever more markets and sectors, from food processing belting fabrics to PVC-U welding fabrics, aerospace to carpet manufacture and everything in-between.
